The US News and World Report education issue is out! As ever, USNWR has taken on the critical task of ranking colleges and universities, including specific departments, and made a complete mess of the job. Kieran Healy has a couple of typically excellent posts on the subject (here and here). He concludes that USNWR‘s methods and conclusions are arrant nonsense and suggests that crowdsourcing the ranking of sociology departments might make more sense. Eric Rauchway, my once and future co-blogger, invites you to go here if you’re interested in doing the same for history departments.

Trivia: Heal”e”y typo.
More seriously, indeed in a Kremlinological vein, how should we interpret “future”? Are you joining the bentwood blog?
Crap! (about the typo) Who knows? (about the other thing) I mean, no, I’m not joining CT. But who knows about us blogging together again.
As I hardly dare remind you, in Ulysses, the store advertised by a phalanx of walking sandwichboard men is H E L Y S. At one point they get out of order, but I can’t remember what they spell.
Eric seems a bit lonely over there — perhaps it’s characteristic of that blog always to seem to be lacking the crucial bloggers of yesteryear — so I say go for it.
I would like to read Ulysses again, though this time with a group of smart people, including, perhaps, a non-ponderous expert on Joyce. Surely such experts exist, yes?
Our once and probably not future cob-logger SEK is such a one….
He knows Joyce? The things one learns…
